November Newsletter

Happy almost Thanksgiving from Guadalajara!

The last month has been incredible. Things that I have prayed to see for so long have begun to happen and it only causes me to anticipate even more what the Lord is going to do next.

This semester I continued my teaching English at a local university not really knowing what my bigger purpose would be there. I go to class and pray for divine opportunities, recognizing the line between a professor and a student, but also praying that the Lord would break down walls and that students would see something different in my life. My students tend to know that I am a Christian, due to the fact that they are very curious as to why I even came to Guadalajara, but some of them would much rather not carry that conversation any further once they know just how Christian that I am.

Mari is a student in one of my classes. She began to ask a lot of questions about who I am and what I believe shortly after the start of the semester. She would follow me out of the classroom to ask me extra questions after the class had ended and she let me listen to the new Christian CD she bought because it made her “feel good.” In spite of all of her curiosity I didn’t really know how to approach the subject with her beyond the things that she was asking me.

One day about five weeks ago, she came up to the front of the classroom to ask me if I would pray for her. I said of course and told her that I had to run to my next class but that I would love to get a chance to pray with her. She asked me not to worry too much about it and that I could pray from afar if I wanted. I assured her that it was no problem for me and if it was alright with her I would call her that night to ask her what I could more specifically pray for. I called her that evening around 10 p.m. and she thanked me again and again for taking the time to do that. I asked her if there were specific things that I could pray for and then felt the Lord telling me to tell her a little about what He has done in my life. I then asked her if she would like to have that relationship with Jesus that I had and she said “yes.” Mari and I prayed a prayer over the phone that brought her into the kingdom of God and that wrote her name in the Book of Life. I could hear her tears over the phone as we finished the prayer, and I was able to tell her about the “fiesta” that was going on in heaven for her. We talked for a few minutes more and then I prayed for her other needs and invited her to the Sunday service at my church here.

It’s now five weeks later and Mari has been in church every week but one, the week her sister had a baby. Even that week she apologized for having to go to the hospital! It’s so fun to see her learn to worship and see the Lord breaking down strongholds that the enemy has held in her life for so long. She’s now inviting her family, her boyfriend and her classmates to church, she wants them to experience the freedom that she has experienced!

The group at CUCEA is called Punto de Encuentro, English = Point of Encounter.

I am so excited to be able to tell you this story and show you that God is moving in Guadalajara. Mari is only the tip of the iceberg. On CUCEA, the university where we have begun Chi Alpha, we now have an established student group and a small group of students that we are training up to be leaders. The Lord is bringing things to pass, things that we dreamed of!

Thank you so much for all your prayers and support, without them I wouldn’t be here and lives like Mari’s would be left waiting for someone else. Thanks for putting me in a place to be able to share Jesus’ love with the students of Mexico. I love you all! God bless!

First Post

Today I have joined the ranks of the bloggers. The main reason for this is to provide an easier way for others to keep up on what God is doing in campus ministry in Guadalajara, and in me. I'll be posting relatively often, hopefully at least weekly, so that everyone can see the workings of a campus ministry start-up, the triumphs and struggles of life in Mexico, and answers to prayer that come up more often than a monthly newsletter.
I hope that this becomes a chronicle of God's faithfulness, as well as an encouragement to others. And also, a place to laugh at the funny moments of Mexico and learn a little more about a country and culture that, although close in distance to the United States, is so distinctive.
Enjoy!
